1.2 Key Terms and Definitions

In order to introduce the terminology adopted within this practice-based research, having now set the context by introducing the City of Culture concept and the setting for the study, this section presents a concise summary of key terms and definitions appropriate to the approaches taken within my work together with a discussion drawing on relevant disciplinary boundaries applicable to each key term. My research is inter-disciplinary and draws upon creative media approaches relevant to cultural planning, heritage and town planning, making links between thematic strands within these disciplines. Many of the terms explained here run concurrently, in that they the issues which they raise are conceptually difficult to separate; top-down approaches are diametrically opposed to bottom-up approaches, but both affect the

community within which they operate, and the assets which are identified will have decisions and values attributed to them both by the community and practitioners.
