Community of practice

Communities of practice are groups of people sharing similar interests or goals. PhD students can form communities of academic practice (CoP) as part of their studies, which aim to support the PhD journey (Janson and Howard, 2004), and these are highlighted as being

something which should be focused on more within Higher Education (Comunian, Gilmore and Jacobi, 2015).


I have attended organized by the national bodies who undertake discipline based research activities, for example the SGSAH and SGSSS (Scottish Graduate School for Arts and Humanities, n.d., The Scottish Graduate School of Social Science, 2018).

Professional bodies have communities of practitioners to which one can choose to align (for example I am a member of the RTPI Planning and Education Network (Royal Town Planning Institute, 2018).
